Thick hair offers plenty of styling versatility, from lasting volume and defined shape to braids, twists, ponytails and structured looks. But because thicker hair textures can be more prone to dryness and frizz, every step of the styling routine can make a difference. Teresa Romero, creative director for Sam Villa, shares five pro tips to help hairstylists create smoother, more polished results on thicker hair.
Prioritize Moisture From the Start
A smoother finish begins in the shampoo bowl. Romero recommends using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to help replenish moisture and improve manageability. Spend extra time working through the mid-lengths and ends, and use a wide-tooth comb to distribute conditioner evenly through the hair.
Pro Tip: Add a deep-conditioning treatment twice a week to help maintain moisture and keep thicker hair more manageable.
Work in Small Sections When Blow-Drying
Proper blow-drying technique is key to controlling frizz and smoothing the cuticle. Apply a smoothing product that provides moisture, shine and heat protection before dividing the hair into manageable sections. Make sure each section is completely dry before moving on to the next. A boar-bristle brush can help create the tension needed to smooth the cuticle, reduce flyaways and enhance shine.
Pro Tip: Fully drying each section helps prevent moisture from being left behind, which can contribute to frizz and disrupt a smooth finish.
Be Strategic With Heat Styling
When using hot tools, more heat and tension aren’t necessarily better. Start with small sections and apply a quality heat protectant before styling.Romero also recommends allowing each section to cool before continuing with additional styling. This gives the hair time to set while helping maintain the desired shape.
Finish With Lightweight Hydration
The finishing step is another opportunity to smooth and moisturize thicker hair. Lightweight oils, lotions and creams can help add softness and shine without weighing the hair down. Apply finishing products evenly throughout the hair to ensure each strand receives moisture and protection against frizz.
Pro Tip: Avoid sea salt sprays when a smooth finish is the goal. These products are designed to create volume and texture and can open the cuticle.
Think About the Entire Routine
Creating a polished result on thicker hair isn’t about one miracle product or technique. It’s about making thoughtful choices from cleansing and conditioning through to prep, blow-drying, styling and finishing. “When you take the time to hydrate and smooth the cuticle throughout the process, thick hair becomes more manageable, more reflective and far less prone to frizz,” says Romero. “Those extra few minutes pay off with a polished finish that lasts.”
