We chatted with Elaine Watson, vice-president of marketing and sales and global education director at Cuccio International, about her work behind the brand and taking steps to become a celebrity manicurist. Starting her career over 20 years ago, Elaine Watson began as an educator with Cuccio almost immediately, though her celebrity work is still fresh.
Top nail trend predictions?
I do stay in constant communication with my friends that are doing [nails] at the top level, so I’ll gauge what I’m doing based on what some [nail artists] are doing. What we saw this year on the red carpet was a lot of nudes and a lot of reds and very Old Hollywood-esque nails. At New York Fashion Week, because they saw it on the red carpet, that’s what they wanted on the runway.
Finding your inspiration?
For working backstage, if I’m fortunate enough to see the colour palette ahead of time, that helps. At New York Fashion Week, after seeing the colours Jordan Louis was working with, I did some research on his style and it was, for me, very powerful feminine. I also look to see what’s happening in Hollywood among the celebrities and at the time, nails were looking pretty simple, so for Jordan Lewis, I didn’t want to add too much to the nails.
Secret beauty weapons?
Sunblock is a must, especially on my hands and face. Just driving around in California, I’ve noticed sunspots start to pop up, so I want to prevent that. Drinking water excessively also really helps keep your body and skin hydrated. I exfoliate regularly with the Cuccio Naturale Coconut Pedicure Micro Exfoliation Scrub to keep my skin smooth from head to toe (and even on my face).
Definitely keep it positive.
Tips for advancing your career?
Education is evolving, so as a nail professional, you should too. I’m still learning everyday and that’s very important. Continuing education is crucial for your success.
Tom Bachik, not just because he’s a celeb nail artist, but he’s been my friend for years, so we’ve always talked nails. We collaborate and talk about what’s been done or what’s coming out.
