Horst Rechelbacher, the man who started Aveda, passed away in his home at the age of 72, it was announced on Monday. Rechelbacher launched a chain of Aveda Concept Salons in 1978 to sell his eco-friendly beauty products from.
While he eventually sold Aveda to Estee Lauder in 1997, Rechelbacher later founded Intelligent Nutrients, a line of certified organic, food-grade, non-toxic, plant-based beauty products.

Many are saddened by the loss of such a pioneer in the sustainable beauty movement.
Ray Civello, Aveda Canada’s CEO and President, took to his Facebook page to share his thoughts on his friend and mentor.
“This weekend, the world lost a visionary, steward of the environment and friend. Horst was an artist with a passion for creativity leading to innovation. Horst’s unwavering dedication to holistic beauty, wellness and sustainability has changed our industry forever. He pioneered a truly caring company and his legacy and mission will live on. It was an honour to have known him. I will miss you, Horst.”
Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson took to Twitter and Instagram to share special memories with his mentor.
