We were so excited to gawk at celebs on the 2014 Primetime Emmy’s red carpet (we’ve been starved since the Oscars!). While most stars opted for simple updos, loose waves and neutral nails, a few stars changed up their look at the award’s show.
Here are some of our favourite hairstyles and manicures!
-Lena Dunham wore her new bleach blonde strands straight, which worked well against her pink ombre Giambattista Valli tutu dress. She also rocked magenta chrome nails to compliment—but not match—her dress, using Deborah Lippmann’s 12th Street Rag. This look is edgy, young and cool, just like she is. Well done!
-A few stars opted to go for straighter locks with a bit of tousled texture. Julia Roberts wore her long blonde locks with a slight bend at the ends, while Kerry Washington wore her mid-length hair with new ombre highlights. We think it was a bit too messy, so we have to declare Roberts the winner of the straight-ish hair look, even if we still wish she were a red head. Gwen Stefani rocked super straight strands, but we’re over them.
-Christina Hendricks wore her hair in long, tousled waves tucked behind her ears with a centre part. Since she usually has shorter, retro-inspired curls, we like this more modern hairstyle. Her nude manicure was safe, but worked well against her opulent red Marchesa dress with gold embellishments. (The red dress trend was HUGE, with stars like January Jones, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Claire Danes and many, many more sporting the sultry shade.)
-Julie Bowen wore her shorter bob in loose, face framing waves, which softened her sharp features perfectly. Normally we find her too overdone on the red carpet, but everything about her looked natural and beautiful. Other stars working their shorter cuts with textured, messy waves include Kate Mara, Julianne Hough, and Lena Headey.
-Stars like Hayden Panettiere and Julianna Margulies wore headbands with wavy updos, while celebs like Claire Danes and Lizzy Caplan sported low styles with deep side parts. In terms of updos, we like Sarah Hyland’s youthful ballerina bun best. It goes well with her voluminous Christian Siriano skirt and crop top. She sported nude nails with a graphic horizontal gold band, and we love that she tried to jazz up her manicure for the award’s show.
-Of course, nude and neutral nails were spotted on stars like Taylor Schilling (Who wore Essie Cocktails and Coconuts)…and pretty much everyone else on the red carpet. Okay, there were a few blacks and greys thrown in for good measure, but for the most part nails were light and simple.
-To keep the graphic sparkly nail trend going, Mini Driver rocked a red manicure with silver sparkling triangle shape in the center. The look was created by Elaine Watson, vice president of sales and marketing, and global education director for Cuccio Colour, using Hong Kong Harbour, Red Eye to Shanghai and Vegas Vixen and a tiny Swarovski crystals at the cuticle.
-We are deeply disappointed that Zooey Deschanel did NOT rock a crazy cool manicure like she did at last year’s Emmys (below). This year her nails were a light neutral colour with one small sliver of pink nail tape across them. Better luck next year!
