Celebs on the Oscar’s red carpet were incredibly tasteful this year, with most stars opting for simple hair in classic styles and barely-there makeup. Some hairstyle standouts this year managed to marry elegance with bold fashion statements to create looks we know your clients will want to mimic this year.
Hair Hit: The Low Pony
Gwyneth Paltrow wore a sleek low pony that had just enough volume and structure to make it look effortless but still appropriate for a formal event. We’ve seen this look all over the Spring runways so we’re excited to see it in action on the red carpet. It matched her nude makeup and structured, sleek Tom Ford gown perfectly.
The Big Trends: Big Buns and Sleek Fringe
Tina Fey and Jennifer Lopez both wore round, high buns with lots of volume, which were simple and appropriate for the red carpet. However, we love Rooney Mara’s take on the bun: she kept her short, smooth fringe and had the rest of her hair pulled in a small loop below her crown. Rose Byrne and Anna Faris also rocked shiney, straight fringes on the red carpet. We think minimalism is going to be big this spring in the salon.
Best Simple ‘dos: The Red Heads
We can’t get enough of Jessica Chastain’s voluminous half-up-half-down ‘do with big, natural waves, or Emma Stone’s sleek looped updo with side-swept fringe (plus, we have a feeling more clients are going to be asking for strawberry blonde hues this year). Both looks subtly complimented each actress’s bold designer gowns but were still interesting enough that they didn’t look like a cop out. Which brings us to our next trend…
Big Miss: Underdone Bed Head
We’re all for gently tousled hair, but was it too much to ask that some stars look a little more “done up” for one of the biggest fashion nights of the year? Angelina Jolie and Natalie Portman both looked like their hair had been haphazardly styled (or had maybe just fallen out). Angelina’s hair was a bit of a lackluster mess for such a formal event, while Natalie’s lacked volume and movement.
Honorable Mention goes to Kristen Wiig, Stacy Kiebler and Penelope Cruise, who each worked beautiful waves without looking overdone. However, this loose curl style is definitely becoming endangered since so many runways shows featured more subtle waves this season.
