Prom season is upon us, and it’s time to market yourself appropriately to increase your special occasion business and, hopefully, attract more long-term clients too!
1. Talk to Moms
In early spring, start asking your clients if their daughters are excited for spring formal. Then, start mentioning some of the styles you’re excited to try out and ask if her daughter would be interested in coming in for a trial. Mom is the one who is probably paying and she may spread the word to everyone else at the next PTA meeting.
2. Offer Packages
If you don’t have an esthetician in your salon, get in touch with some nail technicians and makeup artists you trust and see if they’d be willing to offer packaged rates at the salon, or even group rates if girls want to get dolled up with friends. Also, think about offering to go to the client’s house or hotel (at a premium) to do a prom prep party.
3. Branch Out Online
Going viral is the best way to show off your skills. Offer a few loyal teen clients a free updo if you can photograph their look and put it online. Then ask if you can tag them in it or if they’ll share it with their friends on Facebook. Make sure you advertise prom specials on your website or do a blog post about some of the latest trends you’re doing in the salon to attract young, tech-savvy teens.
4. Find Partners
Limo companies, florists and photographers are also looking for ways to market themselves to teens at this time as well. See if you can work out advertising with them for your beauty services in exchange for mentioning their services at the salon.
Tips From Salon Magazine Readers
Amanda Chivers: Offer a flexible good package that won’t stretch the budget. After all they’ll also be paying out for dresses, shoes, jewellery and hair.
Lindsay Chamberlain: We hold an evening event every spring for our teens that includes free consultations where we make folders for their ideas, talk about extensions and hair accessories, pre-book appointments and give away a free style. We usually have a stylist and makeup artist on hand showing off this year’s hot trends, too.
Chatters Salons: Showcasing prom styles in a fun “fashion” night is a great way to create interest and excitement. Show them what the possibilities are! We’re doing that in Ottawa this weekend.
Backstage Commerce: Extensions are a great way to give prom clients their red-carpet ready special look!
