Contessa 2016 Session Hairstylist winner, Marilyn Vendittelli, shares her favourite products that she uses to get unbeatable shine.
Salon Magazine: When do you first know you want to be a hairstylist?
Marilyn Vendittelli: As a young girl I was always obsessed with my own hair, it had to be perfect! I always did my family and friends’ hair. They allowed me to cut their hair when I was in elementary school and I had no idea what I was doing! My parents being “old school Italian” tried to talk me out of doing hair: “How could you feed a family being a hairdresser?” I always said …”who needs to eat?!”
SM: Who are your styling influences?
MV: Besides my salon team…I’ve always loved the Moscolo family (Toni and Guy) and Vidal Sassoon. These last few years I have been influenced and pushed by Rodica Hristu and Derrick Zeeno of Goldwell! They are normal people with such passion and dedication to their craft! I feel like I owe them so much….
SM: Where you do find your inspiration?
MV: It’s kind of crazy…I can get inspired really from anything! Clothing and patterns are huge for me. The way clothing fits can show such beauty in shape and form. I also love eras. Whether it’s the 50’s, 70’s or now. I love how fashion progresses and comes back again! I believe all hairstyles are a progression from the last. A progression of colour or a cut can be the slightest change but enough to make an impact! I also live in the Niagara area and we have so many beautiful little hidden gems that can be so inspirational!
SM: What’s your secret weapon?
MV: I can not shoot a collection of pictures without using Goldwell Elumen hair colour! Even when I shoot black and white…Elumen just glistens! And I must have my BLOW spray! So brushable, no flaking and great shine: best hairspray ever!
SM: What’s the next milestone you want to achieve in your career?
MV: I dream of being a platform artist and influence people like many people have influenced me! When you look up to people and they help you in so many ways…that feeling is just awesome! I want to do the same!
SM: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone entering the Contessas for the first time?
MV: Do your research. Have a plan and work with the right people! Don’t be afraid to ask for help and guidance!
SM: Who’s the first person you called when you found out you were a Contessa finalist?
MV: My husband David who was also a finalist (and winner!) knew before me that we both made it! When I got the call at the salon (after I cried in disbelief) I ran to him and we both cried! Then I called my bosses Felice and Tony and shared on Facebook!
It’s crazy how time changes everything! Last year we went to the Contessas with some co-workers and David said…”one day it will be our day” and he was right! November 8, 2015 was a life changing day! Three Contessas between the two of us. This is the best industry ever with the best people!
