We spoke with Silas Tsang, who took home the award for Elite Master Hairstylist at the 30th annual Contessa Awards.
Tell me about your collection. What was the concept behind it? How did you decide on which colours and techniques to use?
The concept behind the colours and styling for the Elite Masters collection was Summer warmth. We played with vibrant tones and textures to capture the dynamic feeling of Summer.
The Avant Garde collection was a challenge to execute because we wanted to capture the iridescence of light and colour. The hairpieces and extensions were created using optical fibers, white hair and other clear plastics that could refract light.
What does winning this award mean to you?
Winning these two awards is a great honour. It’s really a representation of how I have developed my craft and skills in the past 30 years in the industry. I am very proud of these collections and having the opportunity to present is a great feeling.
Who is your mentor or someone you look up to?
John Rawson has been one of the most influential mentors in my career. He was my first hairdressing teacher in London and really solidified my fundamental skills. Today, he is an incredible photographer that continues to push my creative boundaries.
How would you describe your style when it comes to photoshoots? Any special rituals/how do you stay on track/what’s in your kit?
I would describe my photoshoots as playful. During all of my photoshoots, we always end up moving away from the original plan, in some way. That means that being playful with our plan and craft lets us re-interpret our ideas and try new things.
If you weren’t a hairstylist, what do you think you would be doing?
If I wasn’t a hairstylist, I would still be pursuing a career in some other creative industry.
What’s next for you after your win? Anything you’re working on or any goals you have that you are hoping to achieve?
Being in the industry for over 30 years, I have had great experiences working with many peers and leaders who continue to surprise me. I am not sure what the future holds, but I will be learning alongside great hairdressers.
