Bonding with clients is an essential component of a hairstylist’s career and overall client experience.
Schwarzkopf Professional North America’s #ForgingBonds campaign puts a focus on the bonds that exist between stylists and their clients, with a clever play on their BlondMe line’s integrated bonding technology that helps minimize breakage.
Josie Vilay owner of Hairology Studio in Winnipeg, is one of the six influencers chosen to be part of this campaign, and one of two Canadians featured.
We spoke with Vilay about what it was like being part of this campaign.
SM: You’re one of only two Canadians featured in this campaign. What was it like to be included in this group of North American influencers?
JV: It was such a humbling experience. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I was excited to be a part of this amazing campaign that wasn’t just about the products, but also about connecting stylists as a community to talk about how empowering our jobs are.
SM: How does it feel knowing that your clients have remained loyal to you over the years and completely trust you with their hair?
JV: It means more to me than they know. When I first graduated hair school, I couldn’t even get my own friends and family to trust me with their hair. How would a complete stranger have faith in me? In the beginning, I didn’t know how to properly tone or lighten. I remember some of my clients unintentionally leaving with blue, fried hair and they still stuck with me.
SM: How have the bonds you’ve established with your clients impacted your career?
JV: Without my clients, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They believed in me since the beginning of my career. It’s not just about ‘my’ journey it’s about ‘ours,’ because we went through it together.
SM: Describe the bond you have created with the client showcased in this campaign? How did you meet?
JV: I met Meagan eight years ago at my first salon coming out of hair school. Meagan and I had similar interests and connected through stories about our ex-boyfriends. She would let me do anything to her hair and never told me what to do, as if she were a blank canvas. I think she felt comfortable with me because I opened up to her about my life. Meagan and I ended up becoming roommates. She has been supporting me in both my career and personal life since the beginning and has journeyed with me through all types of salons, booth rentals, chair rental space and now, owning my first salon. She’s more than just a client to me, she has become my best friend.
SM: What are some of your favorite Schwarzkopf Professional products from the BlondMe line?
JV: My all-time favorite products in the BlondMe line are the leave-in purple spray and toners.
SM: What are some tips you may have for other hairstylists, when it comes to building bonds with their clients?
JV: Be relatable and authentic. I always tell my staff to engage with their clients and get them to open up about their lives. Engagement, honesty and respect is key.
