A salon that has seen five generations of clients gets a major makeover.
The more you advance in your career, the more you want to take care of people,” says Benoit Auger, owner of Rayko, a well-known salon that has been a fixture in Montreal’s LaSalle neighbourhood for the past 52 years. In 2013, the salon relocated just one block away from its original address — to stay close to its customer base — when the owners purchased a building that was previously a bank. “From one day to the next, we doubled in size. And even though we have clients who have been coming to us every week for more than 40 years, I hire a lot of young talent in order to cater to a younger crowd. You have to stay current,” says Auger. Sleek furnishings add a modern, fashion-focused flair to the redesign and a colour palette of greys and whites contributes to the salon’s airy atmosphere.
The mood at Rayko is uplifting, with a full range of beauty services (including eyelash extensions) and a quick fashion fix thanks to a small clothing boutique rented out to a third party. Open 60 hours each week, Rayko has a staff team of 10 stylists and three receptionists. “I think it’s the most important position since it’s the first touchpoint when clients walk into the salon, and the one that really represents who we are,” explains Auger, who truly believes that customer service is a huge pillar of success.
