According to KMS lead artistic director of Canada Michael Crispel, salons are also seeing an return of clients coming to the salon, looking to have their stylist create a signature look they can’t create anywhere else. “Clients see the hairstyles of celebrities on the red carpet and want more of that undone look that’s both sexy and modern,” explains Crispel. Here are three classic upstyles with a contemporary twist that you can easily add to your salon menu, and give your clients their very own VIP experience.

Ponytail Perfection

Maintaining volume and movement is the key to a signature ponytail. For this look Crispel suggests using KMS FREESHAPE 2-in-1 styling + finishing which offers control but with a flexible hold. 

To create the look:

1. Apply ADDVOLUME volumizing spray, and blow dry hair using a medium-sized round brush.
2. Gently backcomb hair, then spray KMS FREESHAPE 2-in-1 styling + finishing for flexible support.
3. Using hands, pull hair up, over and away from face, smoothing the top down as you go, and into a ponytail at the back and secure
4. Gently tug at the hair on the top of your head to lift it slightly and to create more volume. Lightly backcomb your ponytail to give it more volume.

Faux Bob Fix

This is the perfect look for clients who want a shorter style, without the commitment. To create a faux bob Crispel recommends KMS HAIRPLAY playable texture that’s achieves a flexible finish. When it comes to creating the shape, “the proper back brushing technique is important to achieving a soft, feminine look.”

To create the look:

1. Spray FREESHAPE hot flex spray all over hair, part hair at side, and blowdry using vent brush.
2. Curl small sections with a 1″ (2.5cm) curling tong, work in small sections around head, let hair cool, then gently shake out.
3. Part hair into three sections, gently back brush and roll each section up and under, then secure with pin to create a loose, natural shape.
4. Finish with FREESHAPE 2-in-1 styling + finishing.

Chignon Chic

Typically thought of as a classic look, chignon can also be a fresh and modern look for holidays. “Chignons are a more structured look which requires a stronger finish,” says Crispel, who also keep KMS ADDVOLUME on hand to build shape and texture for all hair types.

To create the look:

1. Apply TAMEFRIZZ de-frizz oil to wet hair, comb through and part hair on one side.
2. Blow dry hair, straightening and smoothing with a paddle brush.
3. Divide hair into three ponytails at the nape and secure each with hair band.
4. Take one ponytail and divide it into two smaller ponytails. Twist them around each other to create a ‘rope’ effect, secure with hair band, then roll it into a bun and secure with a pin. Repeat with other two ponytails.
5. Gently back brush few strands out for a slightly tousled look. Finish with HAIRSTAY medium hold spray for lasting hold.
