Jessica Marie Ellison, owner of Toronto’s Jolie Beauty Bar, went above and beyond in creating six new nail designs using Essie’s new Poppy Razzi and Mirror Metallics collections for a Salon Magazine exclusive shoot.
“I wanted to do something art-inspired, but not difficult. It’s something that any nail artist could achieve without difficulty,” she says.
Here’s her step-by-step tips for achieving six awesome nail designs.
1. Reverse Moon
a.Start with two coats of Essie Nothing Else Metals (lavender metallic).
b.Then apply two coats of Essie Camera (neon pink) using a striper brush around the cuticle from sidewall to sidewall. Then bring the reverse moon higher up the sidewall to give the nail more of a silhouette look.
c.Finish with crisp, shiny Essie Super Duper Top Coat.
2. Sweetheart
a.Start with two coats Essie Good As Gold (gold metallic).
b.Using Essie Bazooka (bright orange), start from the left side of the nail and swoop from the sidewall to the free edge. Then repeat the process on the other side to create a design that looks like a sweetheart neckline.
c.On the ring finger, repeat the sweetheart lines over by adding an additional layer of Good As Gold over Bazooka, leaving just a thin line.
d.Finish with Essie Super Duper Top Coat.
3. Graffiti
a.Start with two coats of Essie Blue Rhapsody (blue metallic).
b.Then pour a small bit of Essie Action (light orange) onto a tinfoil square and dip a folded nail wipe lightly into it.
c.Then press onto the nail to create a random pattern. The effect should be similar to a hand-painted shatter.
d.Skip the top coat to showcase the difference in textures between the neon which dried matte and the reflective surface of the metallic base.
4. Ombre
a.Apply one coat of Essie Good As Gold from the cuticle to the free edge.
b.Then, starting from free edge, use a dry brush with Essie Penny Talk (bronze metallic) and apply a small amount in a wisping motion from the free edge towards cuticle stopping midway along the nail bed. Blend into the Good As Gold with a dry brush.
c.Repeat that step at the free edge with Essie No Place Like Chrome (silver metallic), wisping it over Penny Talk without covering it. Use a dry brush to blend into Penny Talk.
d.Finish with Essie Matte About You top coat.
5. Two-Faced
a.Apply two coats of Essie Penny Talk (bronze metallic).
b.Using Essie Camera (brilliant coral), create a curved line on half of the nail bed on the right hand side of each nail. Use two coats of colour.
c.Finish with Essie Super Duper Top Coat.
6. Signature Nail
a.Apply two coats of Essie Blanc (white, to make neons pop).
b.Follow with two coats of Essie Lights (neon pink).
c.On the index finger of each hand, apply two coats of Essie Nothing Else Metals (silver metallic).
d.Using the brush from Essie Lights, tap lipstick marks onto the index fingers on top of the silver base.
e.Finish with Essie Super Duper Top Coat.
