This month’s ‘So You Think You Can Style?’ hair colour-focused contest had our most entries yet! Your votes and our judges have named the top winner: Candice Harder of the Cutting Room Creative, in Nanaimo, BC. Her image will be featured in our January/February issue of Salon Magazine!
Harder was inspired by the colourful ‘royal starfish’ (which is orange and purple) for this look, which she created for Goldwell’s Color Zoom competition. Harder describes how she made this beautiful blend of colours: “I created this look by pre-lightening the areas with orange and purple. Where the purple would lie, I used a medium slice, and where the orange would lie, I used a medium weave. This was placed in a large diamond shaped section between the apex and the front hairline. Once lightened, I applied my orange formula and my purple formula accordingly, along with my base.”
Harder says the key to creative colouring is to go with the flow on set and not overwork your images. “Most stylists who shoot know that it all most never finishes how we imagined. This is usually a good thing.” She suggests focusing on getting a high shine finish for colour-focused shoots.
Harder loves shooting and competing because it helps her learn things she uses in the salon. “Entering contests like these it will push you to better yourself as a stylist and get educated. If you fail, try again! I’ve lost more than I have won, and I am more inspired than ever.” (What an awesome attitude!)
The second place winners were Jessica Nemlander’s purple ombre updo and Aldo Scopazzi’s bright, wind-blown locks.
