As the Nailympics Competition wrapped up in London, U.K. at Olympia Beauty during September 21 to 23, originality won out in a big way. More than 400 competitors from 22 countries gave it their best in nine categories of creative nail design, in front of a panel of top industry judges. Ever wonder what they look for in a star nail that shines above global competition? Here’s what three judges have to say about what it takes.
What does competing bring to a nail tech and their business?
“Confidence in their ability and a reputation that sets them apart from their local salon competition.”
Elaine Watson, Star International VP marketing and sales
“Confidence and with any luck those little trophies attract business too.”
Anna Almbanis, natural nail expert, editorial nail technicians, salon owner and creative director and Greek TV beauty personality
“Humility, gratitude and grace if at all possible as well as the ability to market themselves on a new platform as an award-winner and go-getter. It showcases their passion and dedication.”
Izayah Jeffrey, award-winning multimedia and nail artist, industry expert
What were the judges looking for?
“Consistent, beautiful work. Work that shows the tech took the time to practice. They are able to recreate that work on 10 nails and still have the same quality of work.”
Elaine Watson
“A ‘control freak’ who can make their products do what they want to on 10 nails – all perfectly. Beautiful curves and shine.”
Anna Almbanis
“Excellence and consistency across all 10 nails – the shape of the nail is not the issue – it’s that every nail is exactly the same in every way from apex and sidewalls to C-curve and free edge width. They also want to see an outstanding overall performance on the floor. The judges want to know that you are playing by the rules.”
Izayah Jeffrey
What elements of competing should the tech focus on to get the most out of this experience?
“LEARNING. The ability to walk away tomorrow better than you are today will make you a better technician / artist.”
Elaine Watson
“Know your plan step by step.”
Anna Almbanis
“Play by the rules yet be creative – always use your imagination and don’t consider cheating- the floor judges’ eyes are peeled.”
Izayah Jeffrey
