Ever want to know what it’s like to style hair for a music video? Frank Cini, co-owner of Taz Hair Co. in Toronto, has been working with singer Mia Martina for the last year as part of a partnership between Martina and L’Oreal Professionnel. A L’Oreal Professionnel Portfolio Artist, he first styled her hair for the Burning music video and has continued to create looks for her for events, appearances and now, for her latest music video, in support of the single, Go Crazy.
Cini gave us the behind-the-scene scoop on how he created these sizzling looks for the video.
For Martina’s first look, shot at Hollywood beach at sunrise, Cini used L’Oréal Professional Texture Expert Architexture Matte Defining Paste to keep her hair together in a loose fishtail braid.
The second look was shot at a mansion in Miami. Martina stood on a plexiglass table in a pool to make it look like she was standing on water. “I used half a can of tecni.art Crystal Gloss to give her a wet look,” says Cini. “The hair needed to appear wet but couldn’t be because it would have ruined her dress and makeup.”
The third look was a sleeked back, clean chignon with hair jewelry added on top. “The hair was prepared for this look with the tecni.art Crystal Gloss and then I overlaid with Fix Anti Frizz Hairspray,” says Cini.
The final look for the car scene, which was shot in an industrial area with graffiti in the background, required just the right products to withstand the heat. “Thank God the products are water-soluble!” says Cini. He applied tecni.art Iron Finish and Mythic Oil to the hair before it was blow-dried and flat ironed. Tecni.art Super Dust was applied to the roots for volume.
