Congratulations to Samantha Wilson, a freelance hairstylist based in Toronto, Ontario, for winning first place in our “So You Think You Can Style?” #TBT Decades photo contest! We love the retro 50’s rounded curls!
Wilson drew inspiration from a source close to her heart: “My Grandmother was my inspiration to do this shoot. The anniversary of her passing is May 13th. Since she is no longer with us, I wanted to do this shoot in her memory. When I was younger, I would set my grandmother’s hair in pin curls and roller sets. She was always my biggest supporter and pushed me to follow my dreams of being a hairstylist. I chose the style and decade based on what I thought she would like. She was and always will be my biggest inspiration.”
How to create the look: “To create this look, I used Redken 5th Avenue NYC Iron Shape 11 and then used my 1-inch Marcel Curling Iron to curl the hair. Then I pinned the hair to set it. Once the hair was cooled and set, I brushed it out into the desired finished look and finished it with Revlon Professional Hairspray Photo Finisher 3.”
Wilson urges hairstylists to enter competitions to push themselves and test their creative limits: “Do whatever you can in order to make your goals and dreams come true. Work hard and do what you love. Photoshoots and competitions are a great way to practice, be creative and expand your craft. In the end, it is always rewarding.”
Our second place winner, Angie Hunt, from Chatters on Empress in Winnipeg, Manitoba, echoes this sentiment: “Take advantage of any opportunity: Putting your work out there is the best way to grow professionally.” She also suggests finding a mentor: “If I could assistant someone, I would love to see their process.”

For our third place winner Michelle Brisson, a freelance hairstylist and owner of Michelle Brisson Hair Salon in Brampton, Ontario, this was her first experience with a photo shoot: “It was my very first photo shoot and of course there were some bumps came along the way, but that’s why I love photo shoots, you learn how to deal with so much!”She also encourages younger stylists to take the plunge and enter competitions: “Why not!? Just do it. It’s very addictive once you see your vision come to life.”
