Tim Kuo, two-time Canadian Style Master International Contest winner, explains how easy it is to enter the competition and offers his helpful hints for making your entry stand out.
The Process
“The process for entering is quite simple. You only require one model shot with three unique hairstyles, as opposed to three to five different models like other photo-based competitions. The photos are submitted in black and white, so no elaborate or intricate coloring techniques are required. After your photos are shot, you just have to upload them online.”
Tim’s Tips
1. Prepare
“Practice, practice, practice. Work on mannequins, clients or friends with long hair so on the day of the shoot you know exactly what to do.”
2. Create a plan
“Create an order for doing the three different styles. Since you are doing all the looks on the same model, if you have to style and wash their hair over and over again, it will take a very long time. Strategically plan to do straight or sleek styles first, then looks with curls, then frizzy or textured styles last.”
3. Create a standout style
“Make sure your styles pop. Since it is shot in black and white, you cannot use colour to make the photos stand out. Also, since this is a style-based competition, make the styles more exaggerated than normal by accessorizing your model and dressing her in three completely different outfit and makeup looks.”
