Hairstyling icon Rinaldo Canonico passed away this week at the age of 82. The Ottawa-based stylist known for his list of famous clientele, styled the tresses of celebrities, fashion designers and politicians. Some of his most famous clients included Sophia Loren, Margaret Thatcher, Stephen Harper, Pierre Trudeau and Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. In fact, Mila Mulroney’s famous bob was a Rinaldo creation.
Originally from Lago, Italy, Rinaldo immigrated to Canada and began cutting hair at Montreal’s Ritz Hotel before opening his own salon in Ottawa in 1968. In 2008, he opened his famous Byward Market salon. Franchising his name, Rinaldo Hair Designers & Spa includes four salons, one of which is located in a luxury condo building and boasts its own elevator. Rinaldo only recently retired at the age of 77.
In addition to being a renowned hairdresser, Rinaldo was known for his colourful, charismatic personality. He was an avid golfer, sports fan and animal lover, who enjoyed giving back to the community through numerous charitable endeavours. As the industry mourns his passing, he will be remembered for his extraordinary career and inspiring, kind nature.
