Going green has become a growing trend in the salon industry. And in a partnership with Green Circle Salons, Salon Resource Group has recently adopted some environmentally friendly salon practices, including collecting, reusing and recycling salon by-products. With 21 salons across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Salon Resource Group is one of the east coast’s largest networks of salons and spas. Peter Mahoney, president of Salon Resource Group, says there is no better time than the present to go green, and the group needs to take the lead in reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. The changes were easy for its salons to adapt: hair and colour by-products are sorted into their respective bins before being shipped to Maritime Beauty for reuse and recycling. Mahoney estimates that the changes will reduce waste by 70 to 90 per cent and says he hopes Salon Resource Group can reach 100 per cent sustainability by the year 2020.
