Taking the creative lead for the Schwarzkopf Professional team, Paul Pereira takes inspiration for this segment from the unique shapes, colours and textures of exotic flowers. As Pereira explains, “Ours will be a high-fashion show with amazing up-styles and strong silhouettes, supported by video and fashion by Toronto-based fashion designer Stephen Caras.” The flower headpieces were made completely out of hair that had been dyed, and then was sewn or glued to replicate the shapes of the exotic flora. The most challenging part, according to Pereira, was the prep work: “I went through our team and gave everybody a look or two, so they could work on those looks and execute them on the day of. We worked with silhouettes and the looks we wanted to create, and then each stylist practiced them on mannequins so we could pull it off. The day of, we had a good day: everyone showed up really calm because they knew what they were doing.”
In terms of approaching the segment, Pereira says: “it’s a whole different project, because for our own editorial, we have control over the direction, whereas for the Contessas, we’re working around a theme. We started planning the ideas for the segment from the hair down, and once we had the dresses and the video components, we did the actual hair designs, and that really helped to define the look.” Exploring the form and shape of flowers, the Schwarzkopf Professional team presented “the parallels between the natural beauty of flowers and how they tie in with the silhouettes in hair, dressed in an old-school way with a modern twist,” explains Pereira.
Building a team for a project like this can be tricky. “I kept the team of hairstylists really small for quality control. On the day of the Contessas, each stylist had about three hours to do two updos, and that allowed for plenty of time. I chose a lot of people I work with, we do a lot of fashion week events in Toronto and New York together. We’ve gone through some crazy stuff, and can work well under pressure together.”
