Sebastian Professional’s art directors Shay Dempsey and Michael Polsinelli have unveiled their personal creative project, SM (Shay and Michael).
To commemorate the release, the brand hosted Brainwerx at Wella Studio in Los Angeles in May.
With more than 100 hairdressers in attendance, the highly anticipated event took its audience through the dynamic duo’s personal artistic journey as hairdressers, while also exploring the inspiration behind their innovative ideas.
“Brainwerx is a conversation about who we are and a journey about creativity,” explains Dempsey.
Dempsey and Polsinelli focused the project on the production of Black Armor, a five-piece collection of handcrafted headpieces. Taking more than six arduous months to create, the duo garnered inspiration from the armour of Kendo martial arts swordsmen, along with Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen, architect Santiago Calatrava and fashion designer Gareth Pugh.
“The most important thing you can have to grow as an artist is to be inspired by others. Collaboration is key,” says Polsinelli.
Dempsey and Polsinelli are already looking ahead to their next creative collaboration—Off-Set, a two-day cutting course taking place at Wella Studio in Los Angeles on Nov. 20.
