Instagram has become a huge part of how hairstylists showcase their talents and get noticed by potential clients. If you haven’t already looked into how you can improve your social media presence, now is the perfect time! We have six tips and tricks by salon owner and Sam Villa ambassador, Blake Reed Evans, that will help you increase the client interaction on your profile.

Update your Bio
Be sure that your bio includes your name, salon (tag their handle), location, pronouns and specialties. These are great things to include to let your followers know exactly what you’re about. A high-quality smiling headshot as your profile picture is also highly recommended as your followers are more likely to engage with content posted by a familiar face. Try to have fun with your bio, make it short, fun, easy to read, and include all the necessary details. Be sure to break up text with bolded words, ALL CAPS and relevant emojis!
Post Frequently
How often are you posting on your social media? Growing your following and gaining good engagement with your clients is often based on your photo quality and posting frequency. It’s always important to stay consistent when posting to social media so Evans recommends posting a minimum of four times a week to your feed and three to five times a day on your stories.
Take Videos
Nothing engages your audience more than sharing videos! Show your work in motion by posting eight- to 15-second-long videos. Evans recommends posting video content that shows your followers and clients how to quickly “solve problems” (i.e., how to use dry shampoo properly or prevent color fading at the beach). Videos are also a great way to show off any colour or style transformations you’ve done on your clients. Take advantage of all the Instagram features and try using IG Reels to create captivating content!
Request to Follow!
Are you promoting your social media profiles to your clients? Always ask your clients to follow you and your salon on Instagram! Challenge yourself to ask every client that sits in your chair the magical question: “Are we connected on social media?” Let them know how following you on social media can benefit them. When pitching his Instagram to clients, Evans mentions details like: “I post my last-minute availability” or “I run promos on social media only so you can save money on your favorite products!” These benefits will make sure your clients keep an eye out for exciting news and updates.
Show off your Personality
Social media is extremely saturated with a bunch of talented hairstylists. How do you stand out in a saturated space like social media? The answer is YOU. Your clients can get a touch up anywhere, but they decided to come back to you because of how you make them feel! Share your glowing personality online so potential clients can get an idea of who you are and what their experience would be like with you. You can do that through sharing pictures of yourself working with captions about why you love your clients.
Elevate the Experience
Going to the salon is an act of self-care! What are you doing to make your clients’ visits more of an experience? Recent studies have shown that 86 per cent of consumers would spend MORE on a service for a better overall customer service experience. Is it time to offer a name brand bottle of water or a signature scalp massage? Be sure to create a WOW-factor that you can include in each appointment—and be sure to post it!
