Congratulations to Dustin Schumann of London, Ont., on his first-place win in the “So You Think You Can Style?” Mermaid Hair photo contest!
For his winning look, Schumann garnered inspiration from attending the OMC Hairworld competition in Paris. “Seeing so much talent and creative colour really allowed me to open my mind to more creative ways to make colour stand out,” says Schumann. “The beauty of Paris mixed with attending the OMC competition really gave me a lot of inspiration.”
To achieve his winning look, Schumann used Pravana Chromasilk Vivids “because their colour has a lot of depth, shine and great deposit.” He layered the colours horizontally on the head; thin slices of the three primary colours. “I started with yellow at the top of the head, and going down used red, and then blue, repeating that process. When brushed together repetitively, it blends the primary colours and starts to create secondary colours,” explains Schumann. “Add a bit of wind, and magic is created.”
Schumann, who is a freelance hairstylist in London, Ont., has been working in the industry for five years and specializes in corrective and creative colour. He says he enjoys all aspects of working with hair—from cut and colour, to braiding and styling, to wigs and extensions, and expresses his passion by participating in hair competitions.
“Hair competitions are important to me because they allow me to challenge myself artistically and technically,” he says. “I grow as a person and a stylist each time I do a photo shoot.”
Schumann’s next goal? “Keep challenging myself, and to compete in the Contessas and multiple competitions and become an elite member of the industry.”
Congratulations also go out to our second-place finalist, Kaleigh Thibeau, and our third-place finalist, Heidi Kenney.
