This season, we were excited to see the looks that would rock the runway at fashion weeks around the world. Check out the ones that caught our attention and find out how you can recreate them.
Cool Crimped Hair
This trend, spotted at New York Fashion Week, was created by Rodney Cutler for Cutler Salon and Redken.
“The look is inspired by a modern day Alice In Wonderland. It is textured with bold, piecey bangs and amazing volume, yet still light to the touch,” said Cutler.
1. To begin this whimsical look, blow dry clean hair straight with Cutler Volumizing Spray to create a sleek body base.
2. In 2 inch wide sections, begin crimping hair with a medium sized crimping tool. Start at the root and move down the section holding for two to four seconds on each part until you reach the end of the piece.
3. Spray Redken Triple Take 32 hairspray on each crimped section for textured movement and to keep flyaways at bay.
4. Once hair is crimped all over, use a paddle brush and gently comb through to add width and create an airy triangular shape – resulting in a 70’s-esque textured look
5. For the bangs, use Easy Hair Pro tape-in extensions and use the same crimping technique from before to create veil-like bangs that cover the eyes. (Pro tip: make them hit at the bridge of the nose for the perfect peek through effect).
6. Finish with Redken Triple Dry 15 to create a matte finish and lock in the style.
The “Post-War” Pony
This look, spotted at New York Fashion Week, was created by Peter Gray for Cutler Salon and Redken.
Inspiration: “Taking from the glamour but austerity of post-war 1940’s & 50’s, I wanted to create a simple yet defining hair moment. We pulled the hair back tighter at the sides and created an elegant, lifted drape at the top. The pony tail resembles a horses tail, tied sleek and away from the head with bouncy waves that move as you walk,” said Gray.
1. Prep hair with Cutler Specialist Protectant Spray and Cutler Volumizing Spray for a base with body and then blow dry straight.
2. For the draping effect, divide a triangular section at the top on the head with the base of the shape at the forehead and the point towards the crown. With a comb, work in Redken Guts 10 Volumizing Spray Mousse from mid-lengths to end to create a lot of lift. Blow dry and pin up away from rest of hair
Tip: Using a comb to work in mousse allows for better product distribution and control that hands do not provide
3. For lower half of the pony tail, spray Redken Fashion Work 12 throughout to lay hair flat and sleek. Comb back and secure into a ponytail
4. Curl pony tail in 2in wide sections with a 1 ½ in curling iron
5. Unpin the top section and with a comb, create a wave through the top. Bring together the top and bottom sections – secure with a wide elastic to create an equestrian shape
6. For juxtaposition, finish with Redken Shine Flash 02 only on the sides while leaving the drape and ponytail matte
Natural Textures
This trend was seen at London Fashion Week and was created by Johnnie Sapong at The Wall Group for Electric Hair.
Inspiration: “Return to the roots while also expanding his world. Per Gotesson’s man, dreams of travel, experiments new forms and learns from traditions. Working with each model’s individual look, the hairstyle is natural effortless. Working on volume, the hair is controlled but with a natural vibe.” – Electric London
1. To prep, use Electric P*-4 Preparation Spray directly on hair and work the product with hands from roots to ends.
2. Apply a generous amount of Electric oC-2 Smoothing onto the hair. Diffuse dry to refresh the hair.
3. Once dry, use Electric oC-4 Shaping Paste to achieve definition and create separation and depth between locks.
4. Alternatively, use Electric oC7 e.Spray; spray it into the palm of the hands and work the product onto the hair to break up the ends.
5. Finish the look using Electric °C-1 English Rose Serum for a photo-finished effect.
Voluminous Styles
These “larger than life” voluminous hairstyles were seen at London Fashion Week and were created by Johnnie Sapong at The Wall Group for Electric Hair.
Inspiration: “The collection suggests “self-preservation”, which is felt as, fundamental in these uncertain time. The hair is extra voluminous, structured, built up to evoke the feelings of human beings who are going through dark times and hoping for a new birth.” – Electric London
1. To prep, use Electric P*-4 Preparation Spray directly on hair and work the product with hands from roots to ends.
2. After drying the hair back, start to back comb each sections using a bristle brush; apply a generous amount of Electric oC7 e.Spray and keep back combing
3. For curly hair: after prepping the hair, apply Electric oC-2 Smoothing Cream and dry the hair back.
4. Brush the backcombed hair back and fix the voluminous look with a touch more Electric oC7 e.Spray
5. To create a structured look, mix of water and clay powder together and apply to the hair to a messed up distressed effect
Leopard-Print Hair
Created by Guido Palau, global creative director for Redken, this leopard-print hair rocked the runway at Milan Fashion Week wearing all leopard print for Donatella Versace.
Beautiful Braids
Another trend seen at New York Fashion Week were braids of all shapes and sizes. Spotted on the runway for Nicole Miller, the Brock Collection, Tory Burch and Chromat.
Hair Embellishments
This season, NYFW featured heaps of hair embellishments to make simple hairstyles “pop.” Seen on low ponytails at the Christian Siriano show, in crystal headpieces at Area and in Dion Lee, where hairstylist Eugene Souleiman used a single black ostrich feather as the pièce de résistance.
