Salon owners, hairstylists, personal care workers and beauty professionals across Canada are standing up against the continued shutdown of salons and services due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
Red Balloon Wednesdays, a campaign organized by the Allied Beauty Association of Canada (ABA Canada) and the Ontario Professional Hairstylist Association (OPHA), encourages salons across Canada to put up red balloons on Wednesdays to stand in solidarity and send a message to the Ontario government.
According to the Ontario government’s reopening plan, hair salons, barbershops, nail salons and other personal care services (where face coverings can be worn) will only be allowed to open (with capacity limits) in step two of the province’s three-step plan, which is expected to be on July 5th.
With some Ontario-based salons closed since November 23, 2020, owners and hairstylists have been demanding that the government allow them to reopen sooner—ideally the week of June 14th, which is when the three-step plan is set to commence.
To participate in Red Balloon Wednesdays, take a selfie or photo of your red balloons and post it on social media with the hashtag #FordFailsBeauty to stand in solidarity with the professional beauty community.
