Last night was the official kick-off of the 2017 awards season with the 74th annual Golden Globes. With television and movie stars taking the red carpet, we were captivated by so many gorgeous hair and beauty looks. Braids continue to be a red carpet favourite, with stars sporting modern interpretations of some classic hairstyles. Here are our editors’ favourites of the night.
Blake Lively

“From the front, Blake Lively’s hairstyle is sleek, which compliments her elegant flowing jewelled velvet gown. Yet the details of what appears to be a double-back bun look effortlessly chic and elegant.” — Anna Lee Boschetto, editor-in-chief
Kristen Bell
“I love the way Kristen Bell perfectly captured the mood of the evening with her ultra-plunging neckline (there were just so many stars sporting it on the red carpet!) and rich, golden blonde hair with a feminine side-swept fringe. A true Hollywood classic, this look just never gets old.” — Yasmin Grothé, editor-in-chief
Sarah Jessica Parker
“Sarah Jessica Parker was one of the last to arrive on the red carpet, and she sure made a statement. With a crown braid inspired by her mother’s wedding day look, her hair also channelled Princess Leia vibes, paying homage to the late Carrie Fisher.” — Veronica Boodhan, associate editor
Lily Collins
“Lily Collins’ style was one I just can’t get out of my mind. Her gorgeous wavy and fishtail braided bun was on point. I love the mix of textures and the not too sleeked back front, making her updo look feminine and natural, not overdone.” — Erin Torrance, digital editor
Winona Ryder
“Winona Ryder’s loose, twisted curled side part look has an easy low-key feel that was part of her vintage glam style in the ’90s but looks just as current today.” — Anna Lee Boschetto, editor-in-chief
Evan Rachel Wood
“Evan Rachel Wood stole the spotlight for her feminist stance on the red carpet and David Bowie inspired look. Her grown-out roots are a signature look for the actress, who’s known for being a bit of a style rebel. Appearing a little more dramatic than usual, her colour adds some rocker edge to an otherwise very elegant and gorgeous cut that hits her face in all the right places. It’s the perfect balance of elegance and edge.” — Erin Torrance, digital editor
Emily Ratajkowski
“Emily Ratajkowski brought the drama to the red carpet with a wavy faux bob that was quite the departure from her signature long locks. While her hair captured our attention, it perfectly complemented the drama of her low-cut silk gown in yellow, one of the biggest colour trends of the night.” — Veronica Boodhan, associate editor
Michelle Williams
“Demure, discreet and, oh, so pretty! Michelle Williams gave us the best interpretation of the ‘gamine look’ with her cool platinum pixie, sheer makeup, and a little wisp of a black choker tied in a bow, contrasting her more elaborate Louis Vuitton lace gown.” — Yasmin Grothé, editor-in-chief
