From collecting hair trimmings to recycling colour, tubes, foils, and everything in between, Sapphire Hair Lounge has become a true “gem” in the industry.
The Sapphire Hair Lounge is making a difference in their community, thanks to the help of Green Circle Salons. Since the partnership’s inception last year, the Winnipeg-based salon has received national attention for its eco-friendly initiatives, after a photo of the salon’s apprentice holding a bag filled with hair clippings (collected over a two-week period) went viral. “It’s so amazing to see how impactful that was,” says April Carriere, co-owner of The Sapphire Hair Lounge. “Before Green Circle, the only way you could really give back was to chop off a large amount of hair and donate it in order to make wigs for people [in need]. Now, each time one of our clients gets their hair cut, the clippings go toward a great cause.”
With the help of Green Circle, The Sapphire Hair Lounge collects colour tubes, aerosol cans, foils and unused colour and deposits them into bins, which Green Circle recycles and safely disposes of, diverting the waste from landfills. Hair clippings are collected and sorted to make hair booms, which are used for soaking up oil spills in the ocean.
While going green can seem like a daunting (and expensive) undertaking, Carriere says the Environmental Contribution Initiative (ECI) fee Green Circle charges—it ranges from one to two dollars per client—helps cover the cost. “Salons can get overwhelmed with the process [of going green] and don’t know if it’s going to take a lot of time and effort, or if clients will be upset about paying [the ECI fee],” she says. “But at only one to two dollars per client, it covers everything. And Green Circle has made it so simple.”
