The Dermalogica Symposium brought more than 400 salon owners and skin therapists from around the world to Los Angeles, September 9 – 13 for a week full of presentations, tours and events.
Here are some of the top takeaways.
1. Think about how technology can help your business.
The tag line for the weekend was “Fast Forward – think big, think different, think future.” Annet King, Director of Global Education of Dermalogica, said in her presentation on business trends, that social media is the best thing for small businesses.
2. The future is…vitamins.
Dr. Diana Howard, Vice President of Technical Development and Global Education for Dermalogica discussed, how new technology has improved the effectiveness of vitamins, which will be the focus of a new multivitamin serum plus other products being launched in early 2013. (Tip from Dr. Claudia Aguirre: vitamin C is more efficient at healing wounds than vitamin E!)
3. Go back to the basics with customers.
Skin therapists really need to focus on client interaction more than anything else, according to Jane Wurwand, the inspiring founder of the beloved brand. “Are you a relaxation therapist or a skin therapist?” she asked the audience, before suggesting therapists think carefully about how their touch can help them connect with clients. “Salons are incredibly important, as they are like beehives. Women come in and buzz around and buzz out.”
4. Do good.
Dermalogica wants to support and empower women through FITE, an organization that lends micro loans to female entrepreneurs. Check it out and get involved at https://joinfite.org/!
