Hairstylists and salon owners from across Ontario came together in Niagara Falls, Ont. for Venus VIP 2018. This two-day event kicked off with a night of inspiration with live, onstage hair demonstrations from Moroccanoil and Schwarzkopf Professional, and emceed by Cityline expert (and Contessa host) Bill Rowley.
Robert Ham, director of education for Moroccanoil, and Kevin Hughes, the brand’s artistic director, took the stage and showcased looks from the brand’s latest collection. Ham also offered his best-kept styling secrets that hairstylists can use to make their lives easier in the salon, while giving clients chic options for upstyling, just in time for the holiday season. Hughes walked through some simple braiding techniques that have an intricate look yet are time-savers, when you need to create a customized look but don’t have a lot of time behind the chair.
For Schwarzkopf Professional’s presentation, the focus was creating custom colours, and men’s hairstyling techniques. Josie Vilay, a Winnipeg hairstylist and salon owner shared some of her creative colour techniques and tips using the brand’s Igora Vibrance. Paul Pereira, one of the brand’s Essential Looks artists and a men’s hairstyling expert walked through the basics of men’s haircutting, along with his styling tricks for adding texture and moment with men’s styling becoming more undone.
Day two featured a rotating stage of education and inspiration, with Moroccanoil and Schwarzkopf leading off the morning. Hughes broke down the essential techniques for combining braiding into your styling tool kit, with tips and advice taken from his editorial hairstyling expertise. Women’s cuts and upstyling were centre stage for Schwarzkopf Professional. Pereira teamed up with fellow Essential Looks artist, Robin Bacon. The two shared some key cuts and styling from the brand’s latest Essential Looks collection, with ways in which hairstylists can translate the looks for their clients.
Barbering and men’s grooming were the focus for the barbers from Reuzel, with onstage cutting demonstrations that broke down specific time-saving grooming techniques, along with the importance of skincare—a growing part of the men’s grooming business. In addition, Demo Pedulla, a Montreal-based barber and Reuzel ambassador shared some of his business tips for building your men’s clientele.
Revlon Professional educators Marlo Steenman and Tristyn Feist discussed all things hair colour, showcasing tips and tricks used with clients in their respective salons. Focusing on the brand’s latest collection, the looks had a distinctive rock-star vibe with bold colours, cuts and styling.
Giles Robinson, global director of education for Color Wow talked about product innovation from the brand, including their latest styling products. He was joined on stage by Joseph Maine, a celebrity hairstylist who asked the audience to vote for their favourite looks from his Instagram. Maine then recreated one of his signature, undone styles, walking through some of his best tips for creating fresh red-carpet styles.
Peter Coppola rounded out the event with a presentation by Charles Brand, a global educator. Peter Coppola has recently re-launched their keratin styling line including product formulation and packaging.
