For our Birds segment, the Wella team, with Mirella Rota Sementilli, Daniel Di Tommaso and Rodrigo Araneda, explore the theme through exotic birds of the northern sky. Incorporating an exotic feel, this segment incorporates the unique tones and textures of the birds of the northland using the Wella colour portfolio creating a compliment of vibrant colours melded together with earthy, muted tones found in nature. “We wanted this collection to look and feel authentic. The materials we used were made of only hair, wire and Wella hair colour to replicate the looks of feathers. This took time, trial and patience,” explains Wella artist, Daniel Di Tommaso.
On the day of the gala, “We gave ourselves approximately 10 hours to complete nine models including hair, make up and wardrobe. We had everything planned, so we had a lot of our pre-work done. We also give credit to the help we had from some amazing assistants. This allowed us to work creatively, openly and swiftly with ease,” explains Di Tommaso. Creating looks for a stage show can be a daunting process, since you have to take a different approach than you would to a photo shoot: “When doing anything live, you have to make sure that the shapes and silhouettes are perfect from every angle with texture and balance. When doing any photo shoot work, much of the focus is on one-sided angles,” notes Di Tommaso.
As the Wella team explains, the segment captures “Canada’s magnificent birds as they take flight and soar graciously while displaying their mystic feathers and distinctive colours, textures and shapes.” To distill this idea into a short segment takes a lot of creative thinking and strategizing. “Being a team of creative artists, we have to be good collaborators, not just “idea people”. We had conference calls to eliminate the physical distance between us, some of us were able to have workshops once a week to begin to shape the looks. We also shared images, and thoughts with each other until it started to meld together into the collection we featured, explains Di Tommaso.
