Whether you’re entering the Student/Apprentice category or the Canadian Hairstylist, entering the Contessas can be as incredibly challenging a process as it is a rewarding experience.
While you’re already well-versed on the criteria for your category, we’ve spoken with some industry professionals (who have judged a competition or two) to garner their insight on what they look for, and why there’s nothing quite like being a part of a hairdressing competition.
It might be just what you need to gain that competitive edge.
#1. “I am looking for either a modern and intricate shape or a perfectly executed classic with just the right amount of colour to enhance the look.”
—Kathy Simon, Mekka Systems
#2. “For me, ultimately, the image that stands out above all others and is suited to its particular category will be the winner, the one photo that tells its story the best.”
—Felice Valvano, Valvano Salon and Spa
#3. “A winning look tells the story about hair, all the other elements in the photo have to work together and should be done in good taste. Sometime it’s the little subliminal details in the photo that make a huge impact on the judges and winner.”
—Babak, Photo Babak
#4. “I seek out, excellent hairdressing according to the criteria and professional presentation. I want to see each hair, the accuracy of layering, the authenticity of colour, healthy hair and twists, braids or other techniques.”

Why You Should Enter a Photo-based Hairdressing Competition
For the fun of creating a body of work and having it photographed and kept as a record. Being nominated and winning is great but the reason to compete is to challenge oneself to producing our best work.
—Kathy Simon, Meeka Systems
It’s about the experience and the skill development; the time spent practicing your look over and over again before you are ready to either step onto the competition floor or into a photo studio. Then there is the recognition that you will receive from a win, and the confidence that you will have; which all contributes back to your everyday work in the salon.
—Felice Valvano, Valvano Salon and Spa
Entering adds all sorts of intrinsic value to a salon business. If marketed well, finalists or winners may attract new clients. Some salons use participation in the competition photo shoot as an incentive prize for staff or as a team-building project. But win or lose, you should have some fabulous images to use in your marketing.
