Hosted by Toronto Barber and Beauty Supplies, the Kevin.Murphy Come as You Are event was an intimate evening for 125 hairstylists offering business advice and hair inspiration.
Tim Abney, director of training and development for Kevin.Murphy, kicked off the evening, which featured live cutting, styling and colour demonstrations by the Kevin.Murphy team, including cutting and styling specialist Tim McClean, and global design director and Color.Me education director Kate Reid. Each demonstration created one of the looks from the brand’s latest collection, Future.Love.
McClean shared his cutting tips focusing on creating texture and perfecting a fringe, and Abney shared his styling advice and techniques for creating variations on waves and curls. Reid showcased her application techniques for babylights, and broke down the colour formulations from the collection. Hairstylists also got a sneak peek at Kevin.Murphy’s latest product innovation Killer.Waves, which creates natural texture and adds shine.
Sue Remes, the brand’s global director of education, discussed all things retail. She offered up practical ways in which hairstylists can improve their communication game and offer clients what they are looking for.
According to Remes, the key to results-based selling is re-stating your client’s needs, and offering the product recommendation last. In addition, she emphasized the need for hairstylists to understand your unique selling points, which can help you better connect with clients’ emotions because people are aligning their buying decisions with other people. Ultimately, being their product matchmaker will improve the retail business in your salon. Remes also reminded hairstylists that changing your communication with clients takes a bit of practice but it pays, literally.
