Congratulations to Sarah Rutter, from Whitby, ON., on her first-place win in the “So You Think You Can Style?” ‘Power Ponytails’ photo contest.
Rutter has been a hairstylist for two years and is known for creative fashion hair colours, blonde hair and braids.
For this look, she says she was inspired by viking hair and wanted to incorporate a “punk rock” feel.
“To achieve this look, I used a Wahl micro crimper and crimped the entire section of the mohawk. I kept this separate while I Dutch braided her sides before backcombing the mohawk section and french braiding it,” she said.
“I did a lot more backcombing to achieve the bubble braid in the back and used Puff.Me by Design.Me on the entire section, which helped give me the volume and grip I needed to achieve the big voluminous braid,” she added.
“I finished everything off with a bit of Love Touch Shine Spray by Evo for some added shine and humidity control and then used Keune Society hairspray to lock it all in.”
When it comes to competitions, Rutter explains that this is the first hair competition she has ever entered. “I think competitions are a great way to showcase your work, while also encouraging you to step outside of your comfort zone.”
Congratulations also goes out to our second-place winner, Felice Valvano and our third-place winner, Monique Dagenais.
