For her latest collection, The Golden Age, Vivienne Mackinder crafted three elaborate headpieces using her all-time favourite fibre: hair. “I’ve never done anything like it before so I had no idea what I was doing,” she explains, “but I’m a real history buff and I wanted to do extraordinary textures from a time when hats were really celebrated.” Of creating the collection, Mackinder notes that no part of the process came easy. “Unusual textures are always a challenge since hair as a fabric does have its limitations,” she says, recounting how each hairpiece took multiple days to create. “However, when you defy those limitations, it takes you to another level.” The Golden Age is part of a larger set of images termed Regal Opulence, all inspired by coiffed and set hair from days gone by.
