Let’s face it: More and more clients are opting for a more authentic colour experience. A service that addresses their hair colour needs while still creating multidimensional, customizable tones.
For Vancouver-based colourist Shawna Russell (@hairbyshawna_russell), she had always preferred using demi-permanent shades for her brunettes and root touch-ups, to prevent her clients from having strong demarcation lines.
However, since the launch of Schwarzkopf Professional’s tbh – true beautiful honest, a permanent colour range with 26 multidimensional Natural, Warm and Cool shades, Russell has found the solution to creating longer-lasting yet natural-looking results.
“I’m often asked how a permanent colour can be multidimensional, and if it won’t cover greys. With the Natural series every hair is covered, but there will be highs and lows, and not the same, flat, monotone colour as typical permanent lines,” she says.
Russell, who is a blonding specialist, has also been lightening, lifting, toning and highlighting with tbh – true beautiful honest. “The shades are creamy and buttery, and can have a hint of blush or violet,” she says. “For brunettes, you can create chocolate tones that are neutral and not too warm.”
For Michelle Finlayson, a Contessa-winning hairstylist based in Edmonton, Alta., she’s noticed a trend amongst her clients for more natural, lived-in colour.
“Whether their colour is trend or lifestyle driven, the [desire] for low maintenance is the same. I think a lot of women would rather live their life instead of be married to their salon appointment.” she says. “Colour that looks lived-in tends to look more natural, and there is something empowering about embracing your natural beauty.” Plus, since tbh – true beautiful honest contains up to 50 per cent less ammonia, it’s a gentler alternative.
A technique that Finlayson often uses in her salon? Combining a tbh – true beautiful honest shade with the tbh – true beautiful honest Tone Softener to create a conditioning colour gloss. “I use this option when melting root colour over the top of pre-lightened hair because I get the longevity of the permanent pigment, but the condition and deposit is more similar to a demi. It’s like the best of both worlds.”
