Whether you’re just beginning your hairstyling career or are looking to refine your skills, mentoring can be one of the most effective ways to learn and grow.
Matrix Canada has launched Mentor.Me, a new program for hairstylists and students who are looking to take their skill set to the next level.
“We know the beauty industry is constantly evolving. We see trends are coming in quicker, which means that education is a must,” says Joshua Balint, national education and events director for Matrix Canada. “We need stylists to mentor the younger students coming into this industry so they can be successful and get the guidance and key fundamentals that all stylists need in their career. But we also know that our industry moves fast, so not only do students need mentoring, all stylists need mentoring.”
The Mentor.Me program consists of six monthly classes that will give 10 hairstylists and 10 students the opportunity to learn from two of the brand’s leading educators, Heidi Kenney and Julio Rodriguez.
“They were chosen to lead our 2021 Mentor.Me program because they are great stylists with so much talent and have always been all about sharing their knowledge with fellow stylists,” says Balint. “Heidi and Julio have always educated with the end goal of sharing their talent and knowledge so that we can grow our industry and produce the best stylists.”
Fun Fact: Kenney was the winner of Matrix’s Destination Fame contest in 2010 and was mentored by Rodriguez. Since then, she’s gone on to become a Contessa award-winning hairstylist and member of Matrix’s artistic design team.
“These two are a prime example of how a mentor can change a mentee’s journey and help mold a journey where a stylist can become the best version of themselves,” says Balint. “I want people to understand that to elevate your skills in this industry, it’s not just about taking a class; there is so much more to becoming a great stylist. Having a mentor—someone you can look up to and aspire to be like—is something we all need in this industry.”
Best of all, the Mentor.Me program is open to all hairstylists—regardless of whether they work in a Matrix salon.
“At Matrix we’ve always been a brand that has been about education,” says Balint. “We know that not all stylists have the opportunity to elevate their skills through education. We created Mentor.Me to give back and help remove any obstacles that stylists and students may have a challenge with when it comes to getting top-notch education.”
To be considered for the program, hairstylists and students are required to submit a three-minute video about themselves, along with their social media profile with photos of their work.
