Always inspiring the industry with his out-of-the creativity and pure talent, Angelo Seminara is unstoppable!
Since joining Goldwell last year as global ambassador, the award-winning and internationally renowned hairstylist has unveiled innovative collections and techniques that never cease to amaze.
At the 2021 Kao Salon Virtual Experience, Seminara debuted Hair Every Wear, a new collection that’s inspired by his curiosity of nature.
We caught up with Seminara to find out more about the collection, how he continues to stay inspired and what’s learned most from the pandemic and his role as global ambassador.
Tell us what inspired your Hair Every Wear collection.
I guess what inspired me to do Hair Every Wear was the strange period we’re living in because we were stuck at home during lockdown and your mind keeps going. I was dreaming of a beach and doing something creative with that, so I come up with the flocking looks.
I was also thinking about nature and the beauty of the world at a time when we stopped creating so much pollution, and I started seeing these plants growing everywhere. It was a very interesting period that made me think about the hair of the future. I started thinking about these futuristic lasers and this amazing new technique with beautiful colours and handprints for a strong psychedelic look.
With the punk looks, I was thinking about doing something youthful and daring; something different, disconnected, and connected at the same time.
Tell us about the flocking technique and what inspired you to try it on hair.
I’ve always loved the idea of flocking hair, simply because it adds a different dimension. Flocking is beautiful to look at, so even and so natural at the same time. The hair becomes three-dimensional because you’re almost planting small particles of hair onto hair, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s a flat surface, smooth, hard, it will always give you an amazing result.
Flocking is created by recharging an electrostatic, battery-operated machine that shoots tiny particles of synthetic hair or natural hair—you can use either, as long as they’re dry. You can also mix any colours together. We need the right products to attract the flocking like a strong hairspray. The nice thing is, you can just wash it out and it just goes, which is a lovely idea that it doesn’t have to be permanent. There are endless possibilities with this technique.
How did you choose the colours to include in the collection?
For me, colour is primarily important in every collection I do. It doesn’t have to always be super colourful; it can be just a really beautiful, natural colour. Why not?
In this collection, we have some natural and some less natural colour; something more eccentric and more fun.
If we look at the flocking, for example, it’s very clear that I wanted to create something that looks like the girls became entangled in algae. We have the amazing algae green and algae red with burnt colours like yellows and oranges creating a beautiful warmth.
For the punks, I wanted to do something very Nordic—light colours, platinum blonde on one and slightly beigy on another. My idea was to come away from the usual dark or strong punky colours and go for a very soft look instead. Sometimes you have to lose an element and for me, for that part, I didn’t need so much colour. While for the lasers, the futuristic psychedelic looks, we have many tones contrasting with each other showing the power Elumen.
For the nature part, I wanted to do something with coffee, caramel and platinum tones. We have the highest note, a darker brown as the base. Then, we have something in the middle, like coppery/red together with something very light. These three tones were kept as natural as possible to fuse with nature and reflect the soul of these beautiful angels.
You work with a variety of different hair textures in the collection. Tell us about that and why it was important to you to showcase a range of different models and hair textures.
I wanted to use different textures because it’s fun, and if you’re having fun you can create something beautiful, astonishing and memorable.
For me, texture is the tool that gets you to the end result and gives the feeling of what it’s going to be. For example, in the beach look, we have this beachy, textured hair, which encapsulates the Hair Every Wear concept.
For the psychedelic looks, the texture is also important as I had to create little strands like laser beams. Texture is what attracts your attention to go where, maybe, you’ve never been before. The colour is also very important because some texture doesn’t go with certain colours in my opinion. In this collection, the many different textures become a base for the future.
What is your favourite look from the collection? Tell us more about it, and why you enjoyed creating it.
The looks I’ve created for Hair Every Wear are all very different from each other and I don’t really have a favourite. It’s part of my nature to create and move on really quickly; I don’t get attached to one look or the other. For me, they’re all the same. I love them all because it’s a big responsibility. There are times when you create a look and absolutely hate it also, but in that sense, it’s not something that I would choose.
You’ve become known for your innovative hair techniques. How do you come up with these?
I think, for any hairdresser, you can use something that has already been done. You can use old techniques, you can use new techniques, you can use latest trends… but also you have to come up with your own techniques, sometimes. Simply because to achieve what you want, especially if you’re a little bit outside of the box, you need to create new possibilities. You know how we say, “necessity is the mother of invention,” so I have come up with many techniques and I’ve also revolutionized techniques. Just because something already exists, doesn’t mean you can’t take an old technique and turn it into something totally new.
What do you most enjoy about working with Goldwell and their colour products?
What I love about working with Goldwell is the relationship I have with the team. I also enjoy working with the R&D, which I’m looking forward to working more on. I absolutely love the amazing product ranges—what I love the most is the colours. I feel I have a portfolio of colours that I can pretty much do anything I want with, which is super exciting for me, especially because of my love for hair colour and the world of colour. I’ve always come up with new techniques and tools to colour hair.
What have you most enjoyed about your role as global ambassador?
I feel like I haven’t fully been able to do what I’d love to do as a global ambassador yet due to the COVID-19 situation. I’ve really enjoyed all the projects, the collections, the virtual shows; it’s been amazing. But what I love the most about being a global ambassador is the possibility to share, with all the hairdressers around the world, my passion my creativity.
What have been some of your key takeaways from the past 18 months (during the pandemic)? Anything you’ve learned about yourself, your craft or the industry?
I’ve learnt to be a little more patient enough to stay in one place for longer. In the last 20 years, I’ve always been away travelling, and the past 18 months has made me become closer to my family, to my friends and also to my work in a more intimate way—I’ve loved that. I’ve also learned more about sustainability, how to be more resourceful and how Goldwell is super-sustainable in terms of reducing their impact on the planet. I’ve learnt more about music, more about cooking, taking time to do things I wasn’t doing before. I’ve been more focused on my collection work and creating in a more sustainable way. I’ve also been able to perfect things that I wouldn’t normally have time for because there’s no time to think and sometimes you just have to go with the flow or go with the first feeling. I’ve learned that I don’t want to do that again. I want to enjoy life and enjoy my family and friends; I want to enjoy the company I work with and take it to the best way forward.
What’s next for you? Anything you’re working on now that you can share with us?
I’ve always been someone who prefers to do things first and then talk about it afterwards. I always get nervous about getting things right. I have a few amazing projects coming up. I have some new inventions, especially in the hair colouring world that I’m so excited to be able to share with everybody and people who are passionate about what we do as much as I am.
