Congratulations to Bex Pfeiffer from Gibsons, B.C., on her first-place win in the “So You Think You Can Colour?” with Elumen contest, sponsored by Goldwell!
In addition to being published in an upcoming issue of Salon, Pfeiffer also receives a $1,000 education voucher towards a class at the Kao Salon Toronto Academy, three-night hotel accommodations at the King Edward hotel and a $1,000 Air Canada voucher for a flight to Toronto.
Working as a hairstylist since 2006, Pfeiffer began her career with an apprenticeship in Germany. She moved to the west-coast in 2012 and has become known for her creative fashion hair colour.
“I am not afraid of using too many colours, I just want to add as much as I can but still make it go together,” she says.
For this contest, Pfeiffer says she enjoyed exploring all of the colour possibilities with Elumen. The colours that she used in her winning photo are Elumen and Elumen Play Gold, Lavender, Candy Pink and Icy Mint. “I am a huge fan of pastel and vibrant colours! The reason why I also really love the consistency of Elumen Play is because I can actually paint patterns and geometric shapes on the hair because it’s thick, yet creamy and easy to work with.”
Pfeiffer used Goldwell’s colour brushes as she was working with Elumen and Elumen Play. “I vertically foiled out my model’s hair [with] heavier/more foils in the front and gradually less towards the back of her head to create a front-heavy colour pop to the classic bowl cut,” she explains. “I also left a root for the foils to create a more natural flow with the vivid colours coming in.”
Pfeiffer says she thought it would be a nice challenge to add colour extensions to showcase the hair’s movement. “I love creating action shots. I want the hair to be moving. My model has short hair, so by making necklaces and earrings using hair extensions, I was able to create moving hair for a unique look.”
To achieve this look, she used sponges instead of brushes on the hair extension necklace because “it is easier to make a straight line, since hair tends to get caught on the brushes.” The necklace took about four hours to make and the model’s hair required another four hours to colour.
When it comes to competing, Pfeiffer says this was her first time entering this contest. “I love it! It is easy to enter. I love the fact that you can enter a previously published photo, because I’m always so impatient and want to share my art right away,” she says. “I will enter in the future and highly recommend every stylist to enter. It’s so simple and easy to do! I am also really excited to fly to Toronto and attend the Goldwell academy. Having the opportunity to go there is absolutely amazing and I want to learn as much as I can!”
Congratulations also goes out to our second-place winner, Danielle McCoy, and our third-place winner, Janice Adshade.
Stay tuned for our next “So You Think You Can Style?” contest starting November 26!
