Summer is coming to an end and it’s time to brush up on texture styling trends for fall. Sam Villa ambassadors Jada Jenkins and Cindy Duplantis have provided us with step-by-step details on how to achieve two trendy styles for textured hair this season.
How To: Sleek Braided Ponytail with Extensions
Step 1: Apply a heat protectant and smooth hair with a straightening iron.
Step 2: Create three sections – side, back and side – and leave face framing wisps out. . Apply edge control around the hairline and base.
Pro-Tip: Sub-sectioning helps smooth the hair, make the ponytail last longer and prevents it from getting too tight.
Step 3: Use a tail comb to make a clean part and comb through hair to remove bumps and lumps. Secure back section into a ponytail.
Step 4: Finish with spray and help to keep the hair in place by applying low heat from a blow dryer to the area.
Step 5: Add long extensions (with elastics fastened midway on the strands) by looping through the elastic on the back ponytail. Leave the sub section of attached hair out and place on top of head for later.
Step 6: Create a traditional three-strand plait, weaving extensions and natural hair together. If the ends of the natural hair stick out, tuck them under the extensions. For a longer length, add more extensions while braiding by hooking and splitting a section on the pointer finger and adding to the braid. Finish braiding until desired length. Borrow hair from longer lengths to make the ends even.
Step 7: Take two pieces of hair from either side of the end of the braid and tie them in a knot wrap around and tie another knot to lock in the braid. Add hot water to seal further.
Step 8: Take the top section that was set aside and spray generously with hairspray. Smooth with a paddle brush and wrap around the base of the ponytail (around elastic), and apply hairspray every couple of wraps for extra hold. Tuck the ends in with a tail comb, spray again and freeze by applying low heat from a blow dryer to the area. No pins needed!
Step 9: Embellish with accessories affixed on pins.
How To: Tousled Up-Do
Step 1: On curly hair, begin at the back of the head and loosely make three vertical sections (ear to ear) with a tail comb, while being careful not to frizz up curls.
Step 2: Starting in the middle section, gather and twist hair upwards and secure at the top with bobby pins, leaving hair on top of the head. Repeat on the left and right sections.
Step 3: Take sections on the sides in front of the ears and pin them up at the top of the hairline.
Step 4: With the loose curl on top, pin down to secure and hide any bobby pins that may be showing.
Step 5: Pin down to cover the top of the head and secure, creating as much volume as desired. Use a finishing brush to tease a few pieces of the hair to create more volume.
Step 6: To make faux bangs, take the curls and find the desired length by holding them against the forehead and pinning down the excess. Hide these parts from the back or sides of the curls.
